Dr. Varkha Rattu is the founder of the Periodontitis-Diabetes Hub - the first educational initiative designed to raise awareness on the bidirectional link between periodontitis and diabetes. Currently, Dr. Rattu is in her final year of the four-year periodontology postgraduate programme at King’s College London, Guy’s Hospital. Here, she manages complex periodontal patients and conducting research. She also leads a periodontal referral service in Malvern (Worcester) and is a key member of the periodontal team at The Grove Practice (Leamington Spa). Dr. Rattu’s contributions to the field have earned her significant recognition. She received the prestigious British Society of Periodontology (BSP) Audit Award in 2020 for her campaign on 'Periodontitis and Diabetes' which involved implementing periodontal reviews into diabetes consultations within a diabetes department. In 2022, she won the BSP Systematic Review Prize for her high-quality research conducted in collaboration with some of the world’s leading periodontists. A frequently invited lecturer on periodontitis, Dr. Rattu has a special interest in collaborative care and integrated pathways, reflecting her commitment to advancing periodontal health and diabetes management. Her latest initiative the ‘Periodontitis-Diabetes Hub’ provides up-to-date research and insights, resources and tools to improve the co-management of both conditions and encourage networking and collaborations between dental and medical professionals.
