National Diabetes Audit
Bob was a Consultant Physician (Diabetes & Endocrinology) in Salford 1987-2016. Sub-specialty interests were diabetes in children & young people, diabetic pregnancy, inpatient diabetes and diabetic complications. He led the local diabetes network, was clinical lead of the South Manchester Diabetes Eye Screening Programme, was Trust Clinical Audit lead 1995-2012, was Trust Director of Clinical Effectiveness 2000-2012 and was Trust Chief Clinical Information Officer 1999-2015.
He served on the St Vincent Task Force, the Diabetes NSF external reference group and the RCP Diabetes and Endocrinology sub-committee (chair 2003-5). He has been Clinical Lead for the National Diabetes Audit (NDA) since 2003 and was clinical lead for the National Diabetes Information Service/Cardiovascular Intelligence Network 2008-2017. He gave the 2018 Arnold Bloom lecture on ‘Getting the Measure of Diabetes’. He is a member of the NHSE NDPP expert reference Group. In 2013 he was appointed a Trustee of Diabetes UK.
Bob graduated from Dundee University in 1976, did postgraduate studies in Edinburgh and holds the degrees of BMSc, MBChB, MMSc, MD, FRCP. He has published more than 140 research papers, in the early years mainly related to diabetic neuropathy but latterly mostly concerning population based diabetes healthcare interventions and epidemiology. He was awarded the CBE for Services to Medicine and Healthcare in 2010.
