Dr Zoe Sherwood
Diabetes Specialist Nurse,
Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust
My career started within the Health & Safety Industry were I worked for 12 years, I also volunteered on a part time basis as a support worker for Domestic Abuse Charities. Following my eldest childs Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis at the tender age of 4, I decided to retrain to become a nurse, more specifically a diabetes nurse. When an opportunity arose to become an inpatient diabetes specialist nurse, directly employed by a mental health trust I knew it would be a challenging and rewarding role. I have since undertaken further study gaining the Non-Medical Prescribing qualification and PgD Diabetes and will soon also have my Mental Health first Aid Certificate. I love my role and feel I can truly make a difference to a vulnerable and stigmatised population group whose life expectancy is often 15-20 years less than the general population due to undiagnosed physical health conditions or conditions which haven’t taken priority whilst they were unwell.
