Liesl Richardson

National DAFNE Trainer and Quality Assessor,
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

I was a diabetes specialist nurse for 18 years at the Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre in Norwich until January 2018 and held the position of senior DSN for 9 years.

By 2005 I was disillusioned with diabetes care and was looking for roles outside the speciality when the chance came to do my DAFNE educator training. I was sceptical before my observation week but became a passionate convert once I had seen its impact on real people with type 1 diabetes and it is the main reason I have stayed in diabetes care.

I was the Lead DAFNE educator in Norwich, have been an external peer reviewer for 13 years and a member of the DAFNE National Executive Board since 2013.

I was involved in the DAFNE 5 x 1 RCT and the DAFNE Plus pilot, both of which were hugely rewarding and positive experiences. I would encourage any DAFNE centre or educator to be involved in research if the opportunity is available.

In 2017 I was fortunate to have a secondment with Central DAFNE working to develop the DAFNE Educator Programme. I joined the team full time at the beginning of 2018 as a National DAFNE Trainer and Quality assessor.
