Diabetes Specialist Dietitian,
Dwell Lead Facilitator
I am a registered dietitian who has spent most of my career specialising in diabetes. I qualified in 1982 so have seen many changes in healthcare generally but particularly in diabetes care.
My interest in diabetes stemmed from when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1974. I wanted to be like the lovely dietitian I met in hospital who was a vision in white (coat) and was the only person I remembered who did not cause pain unlike the doctors and nurses with their large needles and lancets!
Little did I know that many patients feel pain being referred to a dietitian!
I have a particular interest in wellbeing and the role diet and exercise has on all types of diabetes.
I was part of the public health team who developed the diabetes prevention programme in Medway and we were a demonstrator site before the programme was rolled out in the UK.
I now work on a research programme for people with type 2 diabetes called Dwell is about type 2 diabetes and wellbeing.
