Leicester Diabetes Centre
Bernie is the National Director of the DESMOND diabetes self-management programme and sits on the All-Party Parliamentary group on structured education for diabetes. DESMOND is a nationally and internationally recognised programme which Bernie takes the lead role in implementation and commissioning across health care systems. This is an award-winning programme that facilitates, and sustains change, for people with type-2 diabetes, which has a proven cost benefit.
Bernie has project managed the infrastructure development of the new £3 million Leicester Diabetes Centre. She has also been instrumental in transforming diabetes services for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as a whole-systems approach which developed a new model of care that was short-listed for the Health Service Journal Awards (2014).
Bernie has a clinical background in nursing and has held a number of senior roles within the NHS over the last 25 years, focusing on change management and leadership.
