Supporting people with diabetes and severe mental illness in primary care and the community

This session will discuss the management of diabetes in people with severe mental illness. This will include the prevention of diabetes, screening and diagnosis of diabetes and management of diabetes. Particular reference will be made to the role of antipsychotics.

Learning points:

  • To examine why people with severe mental illness are at increased risk of diabetes
  • To explain what steps need to put in place to reduce the risk of diabetes in people with severe mental illness
  • To discuss why screening for diabetes and the barriers to diagnosis
  • To assess how best to manage diabetes in people with severe mental illness
