Interpretation of BG data & profiles

Being presented with a record book with a wide range of blood glucose results can be daunting! Blood glucose monitoring should be a tool to facilitate a discussion about effective diabetes management between the person with diabetes and the healthcare professional supporting them. This session describes a simple process for identifying patterns in blood glucose results, describes some of the underlying causes of readings that are out of target, and offers some simple guidance to address these.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify when a blood glucose (BG) reading is not in target
  • Describe a simple process with which to examine BG profiles
  • From a few scenarios, identify patterns and anomalies in BG results
  • List some of the common causes of these anomalies and give some advice on how to address them
