Insulin Masterclass – Insulin regimens: one size doesn’t fit all

The discovery of insulin was almost a century ago; emerging from these humble but life-changing times we now have more than 30 insulin products available to choose from when recommending for people living with diabetes. This combined with different modes of actions, different devices, different concentration of insulin can add to the confusion. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and other International guidelines recommend that all treatment is aligned to the individuals’ clinical need and preferences, as well as taking into consideration, effectiveness and cost.

Learning outcomes:

  • Have gained an understanding of current National and International insulin guidelines
  • Be able to discuss factors that can assist the healthcare professional and the person living with diabetes in the various treatment options available.
  • Be aware of newer insulin preparations including biosimilar and high concentration insulin
  • Be able to describe the risks and safety precautions required when using insulin
