Digital innovation in diabetes

Digital technologies offer new opportunities to improve patient experience, and deliver services in a more efficient way reducing the burden on clinicians and the public. The NHS Diabetes Programme has initiated this digital work stream to ensure that the programme can harness these opportunities.

Recognising that face to face interventions do not always work for everyone, in this session we’ll explore how digital options can provide more flexibility and potentially improve access to the NHS Diabetes Programme, including:

The new digital stream of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, offering eligible patients at risk of Type 2 diabetes, which offers an additional service to the face to face programme. It provides similar support, assistance and guidance using technologies, including wearables and apps

  • Healthy Living for People with Type 2 Diabetes (Healthy Living), the new online platform to support self-management for people with Type 2 diabetes (including a demo), how it aligns to existing structured education courses for people with Type 2 diabetes and how healthcare professionals can refer patients on to it to empower them to better self-manage their condition and support the sustainability of the health service
  • The three NHS Test Bed sites which are trailing digital technologies to positively transform the way in which diabetes healthcare is delivered for patients and carers and to tackle some of the biggest challenges in the care of people with diabetes
  • NHS England’s announcement on World Diabetes Day 2018 that flash glucose monitors will be available on prescription for every patient who qualifies for them, in line with NHS clinical guidelines
  • The new digital stream of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, offering eligible patients at risk of Type 2 diabetes, which offers an additional service to the face to face programme. It provides similar support, assistance and guidance using technologies, including wearables and apps
