Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycaemic state: 2 different sides of the same coin

Diabetic ketoacidosis and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State are life-threatening conditions that are characterised as hyperglycaemic emergencies. There the similarity ends. This session aims to inform, educate, and discuss the different groups affected by these very different conditions; and to assist health care professionals in the prevention, recognition, and early treatment needed to prevent hospital admission in some cases.

Learning outcomes:

  • Have gained and understanding on the differential diagnosis when accessing for Diabetic Ketoacidosis and for Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State.
  • Have gained an understanding of people “at risk” of either condition
  • Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms for both conditions
  • Be able to describe how to treat and in some cases in order prevent hospital admission and readmission for Diabetic Ketoacidosis and for Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State
