Oviva’s Digital Tier-3 Weight Management Programme Reduces Sick Days and Improves Health

Oviva’s Digital Tier-3 Weight Management Programme Reduces Sick Days and Improves Health

As obesity and Type 2 diabetes continue to rise across the UK, so too does the impact on people’s lives, and the wider economy. Many people living with these conditions face reduced mobility, pain and fatigue. This can lead to higher rates of sick leave, more frequent GP visits, and a lower quality of life. At Oviva, we believe a digital-first approach can help change that.

A digital approach that delivers

Oviva’s consultant-led Tier 3 Weight Management programme provides structured, specialist support  for people living with obesity; and helps close the gap on the 3.4 million people needing specialist treatment. On this programme, patients follow one of two pathways: a six-month dietary and lifestyle programme, or a 24-month programme combining behaviour change with weight-loss medication and clinical oversight. The 24-month pathway adds GLP-1 weight-loss medication, prescribed and monitored by our nursing team, with continued dietitian input to support nutrition, lifestyle changes and safe medication use. Psychological support is available to all, from in-app tools to one-to-one sessions with our psychology  team.

The Oviva app supports patients throughout their journey with expert guidance, personalised meal  feedback, progress tracking and helpful AI-powered nudges – all designed to support lasting habit  change.

By providing care that’s easy to access and tailored to each person’s needs, we help people stay motivated and make long-term changes that improve their health.

Fewer sick days, better wellbeing

A recent 6-month evaluation of Oviva’s Tier 3 service shows just how powerful this support can be:

  • 35% reduction in average sickness absence days
  • The number of participants taking 5 or more sick days fell by over a third
  • The proportion of people reporting no sick leave rose from 63% to 77%
  • Participants also reported improvements in mobility, quality of life and mental wellbeing

These results show that supporting people to manage their weight can have a direct impact on their ability to stay well and in work.

Helping ease pressure on primary care

Patients in our programme didn’t just take fewer days off – they also used fewer healthcare services. GP appointments fell by over 40% in the first 6 months. When people feel more in control of their health, they’re more likely to stay well and need less frequent support. That’s the power of combining evidence-based digital tools with compassionate, expert care.

Improving lives and livelihoods

For many people living with Type 2 diabetes, making sustainable changes can be life-changing. Rebecca, one of our participants, shared how the programme helped her regain confidence, manage her diabetes and return to work after a long time off. Watch her story.

By bringing together weight management and diabetes care, we’re helping more people feel well, stay in work, and lead fuller lives – all while supporting the NHS to manage growing demand.
