SHIFTing gears to improve driver health and road safety through collaboration.

Commercial drivers are an underserved workforce facing increased risk of long-term conditions due to workplace constraints, occupational culture, and job demands. While driver health checks exist, questions remain regarding their effectiveness, and there are currently no national-level health education resources designed specifically for UK drivers.

In response to these disparities, we developed ‘SHIFT’—a Structured Health Intervention for Transport—designed to encourage physical activity and healthier lifestyle choices among drivers. Although barriers to implementation persist, we have established a comprehensive 7-hour programme and have adapted SHIFT into a scalable 1-hour short course (Short-SHIFT) for integration within the industry.

The IMPACT team at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, alongside Loughborough University, is already collaborating with businesses and industry partners on SHIFT. We aim to foster long-term, sustainable partnerships to enhance driver health, ultimately striving for a stronger, healthier workforce.

  • Learning Outcomes
  • Participants will gain awareness of:
  • Current health inequalities affecting drivers and existing health check practices
  • The relationship between driver health, industry performance, and public safety
  • SHIFT as an evidence-based health education initiative
  • The objectives of structured health education for drivers
  • The value of collaborative efforts
  • Insights from current partners, including feedback and responses to SHIFT
