Early Onset Type 2 Diabetes: From Basics to Brilliance

Early onset type 2 diabetes (EOT2) is an increasingly common and aggressive condition, carrying a higher risk of complications, disproportionate years of life lost, and significant inequalities in outcomes. This presentation will explore the unique risk profile of EOT2, the impact of social determinants of health, and the challenges faced in delivering effective primary care to this cohort. Drawing on practical tools, evidence-based interventions, and real-world experience, we will focus on embedding excellence in everyday practice. From accurate diagnosis and proactive recall systems, to medication optimisation, team-based care, and meaningful lifestyle support. We will also discuss the importance of language in consultations, and how stigma-free, empowering communication can transform engagement and outcomes.

  • By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • 1.Describe the epidemiology, risk factors, and health inequalities associated with EOT2 in the UK.
  • 2.Recognise the clinical and psychosocial challenges specific to this patient group, including higher complication rates and reduced life expectancy.
  • 3.Apply evidence-based approaches for diagnosis, lifestyle support, medication management, monitoring, and proactive recall in primary care.
  • 4.Use practical tools such as care templates and prioritisation frameworks to manage complex workloads effectively.
  • 5.Adopt patient-centred communication strategies, incorporating the principles of the Language Matters framework to avoid stigma and promote empowerment.
