Oral diseases affect more humans than any other disease and share common risk factors with other major noncommunicable diseases. Severe periodontitis (gum disease) affects about 750 million of the world’s population and has proven bi-directional links with diabetes. Research also suggests that periodontitis is linked to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events.
